Marine litter or marine debris are complex global issues, involving both marine and terrestrial environments as well as their interface; they have long-term negative impacts on ecosystems, ecosystems service and human health. The problem has a global relevance, and people from every country have to be involved to tackle it. Hence it is crucial to promote awareness of impacts, mitigation and control measures at governance and production levels plus showing real solutions from all society sectors and stakeholders through hands-on educational resources in educational programs.

The partners of the Malia projects gathered the activities prepared for the students and collaborated into the preparation of Open Educational Resources (OER).

The OER included in this book are organised following a hierarchy or fixed sequence. We suggest to use these OER as follows:

  • Problem identification activities
  • Environmental consequences
  • Possible solutions

Most of the OER included in the book have been tested in the schools involved in the Malia Project; however, it is advisable to adapt some of the activities depending on locations, subjects, students, teachers, communities or legislations. Some actions are devised for an outdoor setting, since we are also promoting the benefit of working with students close to nature.
